Pokémon trading FAQ

Quick answers to the questions trainers ask most about trading Pokémon, in the games and on ApexDex.

Frequently asked questions

Can different Pokémon games trade with each other?

Only copies of the same game can trade directly: Scarlet or Violet with Scarlet or Violet, Sword or Shield with Sword or Shield, and so on. To move Pokémon between games, use Pokémon HOME.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to trade?

For online trades on Nintendo Switch, yes, on both consoles. Local wireless trades don't need it. Pokémon GO and the Pokémon HOME mobile app don't use it.

What is a Link Code?

A code both players enter so the game connects them to each other instead of a stranger. Share it in the ApexDex trade chat, not publicly.

Can I trade between Pokémon GO and Switch games?

Not directly. Pokémon can go from GO to Pokémon HOME, one way, and then into a Switch game that has the species.

Which Pokémon evolve by trading?

See the full list of trade evolutions, with the items they need.

Is ApexDex free?

Yes. Every trading feature is free, and there's no buying or selling. Supporters can contribute to hosting costs.

How does Mystery Trade work?

You put a Pokémon into a pool and ApexDex matches you with another trainer by the value of what you each put in. You see the match before agreeing, and either of you can decline. Try Mystery Trade.

What if a trade goes wrong?

Don't confirm a trade that didn't happen as agreed, and report the trainer. See trading safety.
